Trade in or sell it yourself? A California calculator
In California, trading in your car doesn't lower the sales tax on the next one [1]. So a trade-in is worth only what the dealer offers. Put that next to what a private sale would leave you, after its costs and any loan payoff.
Example: selling it yourself leaves $2,350 more
| Trade in: offer, less the loan payoff | $15,000 |
|---|---|
| Sell it yourself: price, less costs and the payoff | $17,350 |
| Difference | $2,350 |
| Sales tax on the next car, either way | $3,850 |
An estimate. The tax line is the next car's price times the rate; see the full cost in the out-the-door price calculator.
Why the tax doesn't change
California taxes the full selling price of the car you buy. A trade-in is a payment toward it, not a discount, so it doesn't reduce the taxed amount [1]. Trading in a $15,000 car on a $35,000 one still means tax on $35,000.
What selling it yourself takes in California
- A valid smog certification for the buyer. A car less than four years old needs no inspection; the buyer pays a smog transfer fee instead [2].
- The title, signed by you, or by your lender if there's a loan [3].
- A Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability to the DMV within 5 days of the sale [3].
Trading in skips all of that, and the dealer handles the payoff. That convenience is what the difference above is paying for. Before you agree to an offer, run the whole quote through the dealer fee checker.
Questions
Does a trade-in lower sales tax in California?
No. California charges sales tax on the full selling price of the car you buy, and the trade-in doesn't reduce the taxed amount (CDTFA Publication 34). So the only question is whether the dealer's offer beats what you'd net selling the car yourself.
Is it better to trade in or sell my car privately?
A private buyer usually pays more than a dealer's trade-in offer, but selling takes time and some cost. Put in the offer, the price you expect and your costs: the calculator shows how much the trade-in is costing you.
What do I have to do to sell a car privately in California?
Give the buyer a valid smog certification (a car less than four years old needs no inspection; the buyer pays a smog transfer fee instead), sign the title, and send the DMV a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within 5 days.
What if I owe more than the car is worth?
That's negative equity. If you trade in, the dealer pays off the loan and the shortfall is usually added to your next loan. If you sell privately, you have to pay the lender the difference before the title can go to the buyer.
